Despite strong, early leads in the first and second sets and a third-set win, No. 17 Oregon volleyball (16-8, 9-5) was unable to upset No. 2 Stanford (22-1, 14-0) at the Cardinal’s home court Thursday night. The Cardinal won the match 3-1, with set scores of 26-24, 25-22, 22-25 and 25-11.
Senior Lindsey Vander Weide and junior Ronika Stone had 11 kills apiece, and junior Taylor Borup was one kill away from a double-double with 13 digs and 9 kills. Freshman libero Brooke Nuneviller led with 18 digs, having nine in the first set alone.
Oregon opened both of the first two sets with 3-0 runs to give the Ducks a comfortable lead. Still, they were unable to hold the Cardinal off, conceding to Stanford 26-24 and 25-22, respectively.
In the first, Oregon led until 23-22 when Stanford took its first lead of the match. The Ducks earned three attack errors to give the Cardinal the set win. In the second, Stanford responded to Oregon’s early 9-4 lead with eight of the next 10 points to take the second set victory. Stone recorded six kills in the second set.
The Cardinal opened the third set with a 3-0 lead, later followed by a 4-0 run to give Stanford a comfortable lead. However, the Ducks responded with two 4-0 runs for eight points in nine rallies to tie the set at 12. At 15-14 Oregon took its first lead and led the rest of the set for its first set victory at 25-22.
Stanford made quick work of Oregon in the fourth and final set with a score of 25-11. Oregon managed six kills in the final set, while the Cardinal recorded double that, 12.
The Ducks will remain in the Bay Area, traveling to Berkeley to play an unranked Cal on Saturday at 5 p.m.
