“Me, I’m super fly, super-duper fly.” Ring a bell? Or what about the fact that this living legend managed to create a song that has you singing the lyrics backward without even knowing it?
Missy Elliott is her name, and she just made history.
The Virginia native is the first female rapper to be nominated for the Songwriters Hall of Fame. With nearly 30 years under her belt as a pioneering artist and songwriter, Elliott is finally receiving her flowers. If inducted, she will be the third overall rapper to join the list, following Jay-Z (2017) and Jermaine Dupri (2018).
Elliott has released many songs showcasing her wide range of talent. The ranges include her first solo release, “Supa Dupa Fly,” which had the legendary single “The Rain,” where she actually dressed up as a giant trash bag in the music video. We also see her ability to change the narrative of hip-hop from a gritty, hyper-masculine perspective to a fun, laughable personality point with records such as “Get Ur Freak On” and “One Minute Man.”
It can easily be argued that funny and crazy hip-hop videos originated from Elliott. Not to mention, her creative direction is phenomenal. Who else would have thought to reverse song lyrics on a track such as “Work it?” The most impressive part of her music is the fact that Elliott is essentially a one-man band — writing, producing and singing a majority of her hits.
Though there is much to say about Elliott’s own success, she has also managed to create worthy hits for others. Some notable collaborations include Beyoncé (“Signs”), Janet Jackson, SWV, Monica (“So Gone”), Ciara (“1,2 Step”), and the late greats Whitney Houston and Aaliyah (“One In A Million”). Mariah Carey, who is also being nominated, has worked with Missy Elliott as well.
With 22 Grammy nominations and four of those awards taken home, Elliott still feels her accomplishments are not acknowledged fairly in comparison to her male contemporaries. According to an interview Elliott did with the Associated Press, a lot of people do not know her work. She feels that if she were a man, that would not be the case.
“A lot of people don’t know a lot of records that I’ve written or produced, so that’s a highlight for me as a woman,” Elliott said in the interview. “I always said if a man would have done half the records that I’ve done we would know about it. But we don’t know all the records I’ve done for other artists.”
According to the Songwriters Hall of Fame website, songwriters qualify to be inducted after 20 commercial releases. The 50th annual induction and awards ceremony will take place on June 13, 2019.
Though she acknowledged her concerns regarding the role her gender plays in receiving credit, Elliott took to Twitter to share her gratitude for this nomination.
“I am Humbly Grateful to be nominated with so many other AMAZING writers,” Elliott tweeted. “Congratulations to all of them also.”
This nomination is a stepping stone for women in the hip-hop community. Elliott is now back in the studio with long-time partner Timbaland and hopefully cooking up something great for the new year.
