Coming off back-to-back losses against Arizona and Arizona State at home, No. 20 Oregon volleyball (10-5) swept No. 17 UCLA 3-0 on the road in Los Angeles on Friday night with set scores of 25-21, 25-18 and 25-23.
Junior outside hitter and transfer from North Carolina, Taylor Borup, led the Ducks in kills with 13 and had the second-most digs with 16 behind freshman libero Brooke Nuneviller, who had 17. Senior outside hitter Lindsey Vander Weide and junior right-side hitter Willow Johnson each had eight kills.
On defense, junior blocker Ronika Stone led the Ducks in blocks with seven, followed by senior setter August Raskie with five of her own. Collectively, Stone and Raskie earned 12 of Oregon’s 20 blocks.
After surrendering the lead early in the first set, UCLA trailed by no more than four for the rest of that set. Still, Oregon managed a win with a score of 25-21. The Ducks had 17 kills in the first set, a game high, and an ace from Vander Weide, her 16th on the season. Borup had five of her 13 kills in the first set alone.
The Ducks opened the second set hot with a four-point streak and began trading points with the Bruins two for one to give the Ducks an 8-3 lead. Oregon added another five-point streak, creating an almost ten-point lead, eventually taking the second set 25-18.
In the third, the Bruins struggled early, allowing a seven-point streak for the Ducks to give Oregon an 8-2 lead. UCLA recovered within a point with 23 points to match Oregon’s 24, but again Oregon pulled ahead to win the set 25-23, sweeping the match 3-0.
Oregon will travel to USC to play the 12-ranked Trojans on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
