Update at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26:
Police arrested a 17-year-old boy shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday after he allegedly fired shots on Bailey Lane near Monroe Middle School earlier that morning, hitting another 17-year-old male, according to a press release from the Eugene Police Department.
The victim is being treated at a local hospital, and there is no update on his condition.
Eugene Police Crisis Negotiation Team and SWAT convinced the suspect to surrender to police from a building near 14th and High Streets Tuesday night within 13 hours of the incident, according to the press release.
The suspect is being held at the Serbu Juvenile Justice Center on charges of Assault in the First Degree, Burglary in the First Degree and Unlawful Use of a Weapon.
Although the incident didn’t directly involve the school, Monroe was placed in lockdown following the gunshots. The school continued the rest of the school day in a lockout, along with Sheldon High School, Buena Vista Elementary School, St. Paul Parish School and Holt Elementary School.
Update at 10:25 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25: Eugene Police confirmed Tuesday night that a 17-year-old suspect is in custody.

The Eugene Police Department is warning residents to avoid the area of 14th and 15th avenues and High and Mill streets while officers search for “a dangerous suspect,” according to a UO Alert text message sent Tuesday to UO students at 5:52 p.m.
EPD does not have a publicly released description of the suspect, said an EPD officer who answered the department’s after-hours media line. She did not know whether or not the suspect was carrying a weapon.
Eugene police request that residents to avoid the area and to stay inside.
