Sabrina Ionescu picked up her ninth career triple-double as the Oregon women’s basketball team completed the road sweep of the mountain schools after its 84-68 win over the Utah Utes on Sunday. The Ducks improve to 20-4 and 9-1 in the Pac-12.
Ionescu finished the game with 19 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds but it was Maite Cazorla who led the way with 21 points, knocking down all five of her 3-point attempts in the win.
Following the Colorado game, Kelly Graves said on the postgame radio show that Cazorla would miss time with an injury. However, according to the Pac-12 Networks broadcast, X-rays completed on her hand showed that she could play.
With 3 minutes, 30 seconds left in the third quarter Mallory McGwire and Ruthy Hebard were on the bench with four fouls, but a Cazorla 3-pointer gave Oregon a double-digit lead. Hebard sat for over half of the fourth quarter, while McGwire provided some foul-free minutes and the Ducks maintained a double-digit lead throughout the fourth quarter.
After starting slow against Colorado, the Ducks raced out to a 14-point lead over the Utes and kept Utah from hitting their first field goal attempt until 4:36 left in the first quarter. However, after trailing 23-4, the Utah Utes went on a 13-4 run to get back into the game to end the quarter.
Utah converted a 3-point play to cut Oregon’s lead lead down to three points, but missed a 3-point attempt that would have tied the game. Instead, Ionescu hit a 3 and Satou Sabally followed with a layup to push the Oregon lead back to eight points and Utah went cold again. The Ducks kept the Utes from converting a field goal attempt in the final 6:05 of the first half and took a 43-32 into halftime.
The Ducks return home to Matthew Knight Arena to play the California Golden Bears on Friday at 8 p.m.
