After a spring break full of road trip mix-tapes and spring break anthems, it seems like a good time for some new music. Tuesday’s album releases feature a great mix of seasoned veterans and musical newcomers that will surely revamp an iTunes of played-out vacation music. These new albums will surely start a great spring term 2011 off on the right foot.
The Pains of Being a Pure Heart — “Belong”
Arguably March’s most anticipated album, “Belong” is the second album from the New York indie-retro rock band that has constantly created buzz since it arrived on the music scene four years ago. The band’s youth-driven lyrics and heavy guitar melodies have made its music relatable in a raw format to any young listener. This album has the potential to reinforce the belief that The Pains of Being a Pure Heart can rise above the disposable nature of the digital era of music and cement itself as a producer of memorable music.
Yelle — “Safari Disco Club”
The French electro-pop sensation Yelle is following the success from its debut album, “Pop Up.” “Safari Disco Club” has already received positive reviews after its March 14 release in France and March 21 release in the U.K. American and Canadian audiences will finally get to listen to the lighthearted club melodies that will surely complement the sunnier season of the year.
Snoop Dogg — “Doggumentary”
“Doggumentary” marks Snoop’s 11th studio album release, an astounding number for any musician. Originally announced as the sequel to Snoop’s widely successful 1993 debut album “Doggystyle,” the album title was then changed to “Doggumentary,” working as an album that documents the artist’s long career. Featuring a great deal of collaboration, including John Legend, Wiz Khalifa, Kanye West, Gorillaz, Trey Songz and a handful of others, “Doggumentary” also lists more than 10 producers on its 21 tracks.
Peter, Bjorn and John — “Gimme Some”
The Swedish indie band Peter, Bjorn and John, who have presented the music world with catchy tracks like “Young Folks,” “Objects of My Affection” and “Amsterdam,” look to leave a few more memorable singles from “Gimme Some.” The first single off the album, “Second Chance,” is an upbeat, guitar-driven track that reminds fans of the same sound the band has delivered for more than a decade.
Wiz Khalifa — “Rolling Papers”
The 23-year-old Pittsburgh-based rapper is releasing his first studio album with a major record label. After a successful past two years with the independent release of “Deal Or No Deal” and the “Kush & Orange Juice” mix-tape, Khalifa is looking to build on his mainstream popularity. The album’s content centers around smoking weed, spending money and getting women — song themes that will surely find their way onto the playlists of many college parties.
