It was a difficult weekend for both the men’s and women’s tennis teams, as both found themselves swept at the hands of UCLA and USC.
Playing at home on Friday, the women attempted to break a three-match losing skid against the Trojans. Things got off to an ominous start, however, when the Ducks lost the opening doubles point by a margin of 2-1. As the match continued with singles play, things only became worse. The women lost all six of their singles matches and USC walked away with a commanding 7-0 victory.
With an opportunity for redemption Saturday, the Ducks dug themselves in another hole by losing the doubles point 3-0. Senior Pavlina Smatova defeated McCall Jones in singles play, but it would prove to be Oregon’s only win in a 6-1 match defeat.
For the men, it was an equally disappointing weekend. Playing on the road in Los Angeles, the Ducks were significantly outplayed by two of the top 20 teams in the nation. On Friday against No. 2 USC, Oregon was simply overmatched and failed to win a single point in doubles or singles play en route to a 7-0 defeat. The results against No. 16 UCLA were similarly discouraging, as the Ducks again fell 7-0.
The men, who have now lost three straight, will have a chance to right the ship Friday at home against California. The women, meanwhile, travel to Long Beach State on Friday.
