Oregon’s introduction to Pacific-10 Conference play didn’t go according to plan.
The Ducks baseball team suffered a three-game sweep at No. 5 Arizona State over the weekend in Oregon’s first Pac-10 series of the year. It was the first time Oregon went winless in a series since they dropped three in a row at Oregon State last May.
The Sun Devils topped the Ducks 5-2 Friday, 3-1 Saturday and 8-0 Sunday.
Tyler Anderson, Madison Boer and Alex Keudell all suffered losses for Oregon, while Brady Rogers, Jake Barrett and Kramer Champlin earned wins for Arizona State.
While Oregon’s pitchers struggled at times, the Ducks’ ineffective offense was the story of the series. Oregon had only 18 hits and stranded 21 runners over the series’ 27 innings. Of greater concern was Oregon’s trouble in consistently putting runners in scoring position — the Ducks only had one extra-base hit over the final two games of the series.
On a more positive note for Oregon, second baseman Danny Pulfer extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a solid weekend at the plate. That’s the longest by an Oregon player since the program was reinstated in 2009.
Oregon will return to action Friday when they host Washington. First pitch at PK Park is scheduled for 6 p.m.
