Kiko Alonso, a junior linebacker for the Oregon football team, has been suspended indefinitely after being arrested Sunday and charged with first degree burglary, first degree criminal trespass and second degree criminal mischief, according a release from the Oregon Athletic Department.
Alonso, 20, of Los Gatos, Calif., was arrested after breaking into the house of a Eugene woman, according to The Register-Guard. In a 911 call, the woman stated that Alonso was at her front door and demanding to be let in the house. She left the house after the call, and police found Alonso inside upon arrival.
Police stated that there was no relationship between Alonso and the woman.
Alonso was booked at Lane County jail and eventually released later on Sunday. He will appear in Lane County Court on May 17 at 8:30 a.m., according to The Register-Guard.
After spending the 2010 season under suspension for a DUII arrest and recovering from a torn knee ligament, Alonso was expected to play a key role on defense in the fall. With the graduation of Casey Matthews, a spot at middle linebacker was there for the taking.
In Saturday’s annual Oregon Spring Game, Alonso recorded four tackles, including one for a loss.
Appearing on Oregonian reporter John Canzano’s The Bald Faced Truth radio program, Oregon head coach Chip Kelly commented briefly on the arrest.
“Immediate reaction is disappointment,” Kelly said to Canzano. “What else do I need to do to educate these men on what they need to do to behave? One incident is one too many. We’re all judged on our track record.”
Kelly also stated that Alonso will remain on suspension until more facts are gathered regarding what happened.
