Eugene Police Department personnel responded to reports of shots fired early Monday evening during what officers identified as an apparent suicide in the 2700 block of Fairmount Boulevard.
EPD Sgt. Terry Fitzpatrick said a woman came home and found spent firearm casings and a receipt for ammunition in her home and contacted authorities. There had been initial reports of shots fired in the area before this discovery, and one of the first officers to arrive on the scene reported hearing one shot in the vicinity at approximately 5:40 p.m. after responding to the call, according to EPD Lieutenant Tom Eichhorn. The shots reportedly came from a long-barreled rifle or shotgun-type weapon.
Dozens of law enforcement personnel and vehicles promptly responded to the area, temporarily blocking access for residents and creating bottlenecks in the narrow street. Some neighbors were evacuated or moved to safer locations, and what appeared to be a SWAT team with breaching and room-clearing equipment responded to the scene, along with emergency rescue vehicles.
University Department of Public Safety vehicles deterring the public from entering the area from streets closest to the University.
Upon entering the residence, authorities discovered the body of a 51-year-old male who Fitzpatrick said had likely died of a fatal, self-inflicted gunshot wound. As of press time, the name of the individual had not been released.
Police began to clear the area and return access to the public at approximately 7:30 p.m. The vast majority of law enforcement vehicles had left the scene by 8 p.m.
