Oregon freshman sprinter English Gardner, the newly anointed fastest woman under the age of 20, was named Athlete of the Week by USA Track & Field on Wednesday.
Gardner, a native of Voorhees, N.J., won the women’s 100-meter dash at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships Saturday in 11.03 seconds. The mark was a new American junior record and a Pacific-10 Conference meet record, the latter held by former UCLA star Gail Devers.
“When I was 13, I was at a Nike event at the Penn Relays, and Gail Devers taught me how to start out of the blocks,” Gardner said in a USATF media release. “I thought it was cool that I’m now using that start to break her record.”
The mark bests her own school record of 11.30, set at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 16.
Gardner excelled in her Pac-10 Championships debut, also taking third place at 200 meters (23.02).
