Later on Friday, Jose Izquierdo and Douglas Mayeda lost to USC’s Ray Sarmiento and Steven Johnson (8-2), and Aaron Clissold and Sho Higuchi lost to Zach Gilbert and Sky Lovill of California in the invitational draw.
On the singles side, Rovello and Cambier each won their first-round matches but ultimately fell to a pair of top-10 ranked opponents in the round of 16. Rovello was defeated by USC’s Johnson (the top-ranked player), and Cambier dropped his second-round matchup to No. 9 Bradley Klahn of Stanford.
At season’s end, the Oregon men went 11-11 in dual competition, with Rovello (18-15) and Cambier (21-12) coming out of their first seasons with winning records.
In the women’s competition, senior Pavlina Smatova and sophomore Patricia Skowronski fell to USC’s Cristala Andrews and Alison Ramos in an 8-3 contest. The duo went 22-13 overall on the year.
Smatova, ranked No. 107 in singles play, defeated Washington’s Aleksandra Krsljanin in an exhibition match (6-4, 6-1) to cap her Oregon career on a high note.
The victory was Smatova’s 23rd of the year, which tied Katie Glynn’s mark for the sixth most in school history. The Plzen, Czech Republic native finished her career as a Duck with a 60-52 record in singles play, and a 59-49 mark in doubles action.
