Thumbs up: Giffords to watch Endeavour
Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was tragically shot four months ago in Tucson, Ariz., will be present to watch her husband, Mark Kelly, take off on the space shuttle Endeavour at the Kennedy Space Station in Florida. The shuttle is scheduled to launch Monday at 8:56 a.m. It’s great to see that Giffords’ condition has stabilized to the point where she can watch her husband. It might not be headline-making political news, but when an alumna of our University is selected to be co-anchor of a major morning news show, it’s important to take note. Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the 62-year-old French head of the International Monetary Fund, allegedly chased down a housekeeping employee, while naked, at the Sofitel hotel in New York on Saturday. Strauss-Kahn has been charged with criminal sexual assault, attempted rape and unlawful imprisonment. Thumbs down: Eugene schools have too few class days
In all of the complaints about budgets from both sides, the impact of our education woes goes unnoticed. The Register-Guard ran a story on Sunday about how nine elementary schools in the Eugene 4J school district and all seven elementary schools in Bethel are not in compliance with the state-regulated minimum 900 hours of instruction time.
