The Oregon men’s track and field team had a productive signing day, landing one of the top prep distance runners in the United States.
Lukas Verzbicas, a native of Lithuania who lives in Orland Park, Ill., signed a letter of intent Wednesday to join the Ducks next season.
Verzbicas won both the Nike Cross Nationals and Foot Locker National Cross Country championships this season and became the first athlete to win Foot Locker nationals in consecutive years since U.S. Olympian Dathan Ritzenhein (1999-00). His indoor 5,000-meter time of 14:18.42, set last year at Nike Indoor Nationals, is a national high school record.
Verzbicas is also an accomplished junior triathlete, placing fourth overall at the ITU Junior World Triathlon Championships in Budapest, Hungary, last September. He has expressed an interest in competing in Olympic triathlons in the future but will focus on distance running with the Ducks.
Oregon is expected to release the names of its 2011 recruiting class members within the next week.
