Arizona
For the first time since 2005, the Arizona women’s basketball team registered a win over Arizona State in the Territorial Cup. The Wildcats beat the Sun Devils 73-61 on Sunday behind an incredible 22-point, 22-rebound performance by senior Ify Ibekwe. The win improved Arizona’s record to 14-9 overall, (5-7 Pacific-10 Conference), as the team prepares for the regular season’s stretch run.
Arizona State
The Pac-10 is known for its dominance in softball, and Arizona State appears to be one of the conference’s top teams in 2011. The Sun Devils began their season with a 5-1 mark in the season-opening Kajikawa Classic. Arizona State notched wins over Western Michigan, Cal Poly, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and San Jose State, and suffered its only defeat to Utah.
California
Last week, it was reported that Cal was prepared to cut baseball and men’s gymnastics because of a funding shortfall. Apparently, the men’s gymnastics team didn’t get word of its impending doom. The No. 2 Bears upset No. 1 Stanford on Saturday night, 343.3-339.7. The Bears won the floor, vault, parallel bars and high bar events to top the Cardinal. The Bears return to action next weekend in the Stanford Open.
Oregon
Oregon’s men’s tennis team is now 7-1 on the season after a dominant 7-0 victory over Seattle University last weekend. The Ducks won all nine matches over the visiting Redhawks to earn perhaps their most dominant victory of the season. Oregon, which completed a six-match homestand, now begins a string of four straight road matches, against UC Irvine, UC Riverside, Washington and San Francisco.
Oregon State
Oregon State’s wrestling team ended its 2010-11 regular season with a dominant 36-9 win over visiting Cal State Fullerton. The Beavers, ranked No. 21 in the nation, improved their season record to 11-5-2. They’ll have an opportunity to send seniors Colby Covington, Jon Brascetta and Brice Arand out in style later this month when Gill Coliseum hosts the Pac-10 Championships.
Stanford
The Stanford women’s basketball team has long been a national power, but it recently climbed to previously unreached heights. The Cardinal set a Pac-10 record by winning its 49th straight conference game last Thursday against Washington State, breaking the previous mark, also set by Stanford in the 1990s. The Cardinal, which extended its streak to 50 games with a win over Washington Saturday, visits USC on Thursday.
UCLA
UCLA men’s basketball coach Ben Howland has taken a lot of criticism in recent years for underachieving with a perceived talent advantage. This year, however, Howland and his team have done a lot to quiet the critics. The Bruins (18-7, 9-3 Pac-10) won their fifth straight game Saturday, defeating Oregon State 69-61. UCLA will visit Cal on Thursday as the Bruins try to improve their NCAA Tournament position.
USC
The No. 2 USC women’s water polo team bounced back from its first loss of the season last week to Stanford, defeating Cal Baptist 19-4 over the weekend. Madeline Rosenthal scored four goals and Women of Troy Joelle Bekhazi and Kristen Dronberger added hat tricks in the dominant victory. USC returns to action on Friday in a road match against Long Beach State.
Washington
The Washington men’s basketball team rebounded from a three-game losing streak to defeat Cal and Stanford this weekend. Last Thursday, Washington scored a Pac-10 season-high 109 points in a 109-77 stomping of Cal, then put up 87 in an 11-point win over Stanford. The Huskies visit UCLA on Thursday.
Washington State
For the first time since 1998, the Washington State women’s basketball team engineered a season sweep of Cal. Last Saturday, the Cougars topped the Bears 68-66 in Berkeley. At 8-17 overall and 6-7 in Pac-10 play, Washington State isn’t having what conventional wisdom would dictate as a successful season, but it’s clear improvement for a program that hadn’t won six conference games since 2001.
