Every Friday, University ambassadors and tour guides can be seen directing groups of potential students around campus. Today’s groups were slightly shorter. Three classes from Park Rose Middle School in NE Portland got a chance to visit the University today as part of the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program. AVID — a nation-wide program — focuses on the academic middle, students who would not normally receive special attention for being at the top or bottom of their respective classes, in an attempt to challenge and prepare them for college. In addition to the more rigorous curriculum, students tour high schools, colleges and universities to inspire them with opportunities and help kids fully realize their potential.
