At a time when there doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day to accomplish everything, it is often rare for students to meet with top leaders in any given industry to network or even exchange ideas.
For University junior business major Aigerim Tulepbergenova,@@http://directory.uoregon.edu/telecom/directory.jsp?p=findpeople%2Ffind_results&m=student&d=person&b=name&s=Aigerim+Tulepbergenova@@ that opportunity will become a reality over the next several days as she attends an international business conference that is hosted by Business Today — a business magazine from Princeton University that touts itself as being “the largest student-run publication in the country.”@@http://www.businesstoday.org/student-involvement?edit[autoassignrole_user][user_roles]=6@@
The three-day conference, which officially kicked off Sunday, will feature keynote speeches from executives at prestigious organizations, including American Airlines, NBC Universal, Universal Studios and Teach for America.
“I am looking forward to learning more about international business from experienced professionals,” Tulepbergenova said. “I am excited about participating in discussions with the open-minded and outstanding students from all over the world, analyzing the global market situation during the conference workshops and, most importantly, getting valuable advice from guest speakers.”
However, this is not the first time that Tulepbergenova has been selected for this rare opportunity. In fact, this is the second year that the Business Honors Program coordinator was chosen.
“This year, I was excited to find out that I got selected once again,” Tulepbergenova said. “The moment I received an email and read that I was selected, I started automatically saying, “Cool and amazing,” out loud in various languages I know (Kazakh, Russian, English, French and Chinese).”@@like, OMG! I’m so pompous! Can you tell? – BTW, feel free to take out the languages here, I left them in just to show you personality@@
In all, Sloan Rudberg, the marketing director for Business Today,@@http://www.businesstoday.org/profile/sloan-rudberg@@ estimates that Tulepbergenova beat out between 1,000 to 2,000@@quite a margin@@ applicants across the world who applied for one of the conference’s 150 open slots back in May. Students were selected based upon several categories, including academic excellence, entrepreneurial spirit, leadership abilities, professional preparation development, knowledge of current issues and business interests.@@Can you actually measure “entrepreneurial spirit”? Is it something like Teen Spirit?@@
Rudberg explained that the conference is intended to decrease the communication gap between business executives and students.
“The most exciting thing about it that students will take away,” he said, “is the experience of having spent time around other motivated students and executives who have reached this excellent point in their professional career and decided to give back with their time and develop young leadership and interest in business.”
He also said the conference is happening at a pivotal point in many industries, when sparks between middle-class workers and corporate executives have flared on the national stage.@@I would have liked to have more on this@@
“I think we’re having this event at a critical time in the economic history of our country,” Rudberg said. “It’s great to have an opportunity to develop young leaders and show them what business is.”
