Second Quarter Update
RECAP
Stanford capped a 13-play, 78-yard drive with a 16-yard scoring pass from Luck to Griff Whalen less than two minutes into the second quarter. The drive took nearly 5 1/2 minutes off the game clock, giving the ball back to Oregon with 13:46 remaining in the half.
The Ducks promptly took the ball 85 yards on six plays, with LaMichael James taking a handoff 58 yards to pay dirt to give Oregon a 15-6 lead after a successful Alejandro Maldonado extra point. The scoring run was James’ 10th on the ground this season and 12th overall.
Two possessions later, following a De’Anthony Thomas fumble near midfield, Stanford’s Eric Whitaker split the uprights from 46 yards out to pull the Cardinal with a touchdown.
Known for his short memory, the true freshman running back made the play of the first half on Oregon’s ensuing possession. With a 4th-and-7 opportunity at the Stanford 41, Thomas took a screen pass up the sideline without a defender in sight to put the Ducks ahead 22-9 with less than three minutes remaining.
Stanford responded with its best drive of the half. The Cardinal marched 84 yards on eight plays before Luck found Whalen for his second touchdown of the quarter from 18 yards out.
The Ducks then picked up a pair of first downs before the clock expired.
