A university student was arrested in a serious traffic accident early Friday morning after colliding with another student on bike on West 11th Street near High Street.
Senior Patrick Compton, 21, hit senior Craig Macfie, 24, from behind while driving westbound on W. 11th around 2:30 a.m. Macfie received life-threatening injuries and was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Riverbend for treatment.
Early Saturday evening, Macfie was declared dead.
Compton was arrested on scene and charged with assault in the second degree and driving under the influence of intoxicants. The initial investigation showed the bicyclist was in the bike lane when hit by Compton, who was driving a Toyota 4-Runner.
The accident closed the roads between Mill Street and Pearl Street at 11th for six hours earlier this morning while the Major Collision Investigations Team investigated the accident on site.
Police are continuing to investigate. They also request that any witnesses of the crash come forward and contact Officer Scott Dillion at (541) 682-5157.
