On Nov. 3 the Register-Guard reported that the Goshen fire district hopes to add a tax to allow the fire district to upgrade its aging fleet of engines. The voters will be asked to approve a 10-year tax to generate the revenue. The district is asking voters to approve a property tax increase on Tuesday, adding 50 cents to the $1.71 currently collected per $1,000 in assessed valuation, for a 10-year period.
The Occupy Portland movement continues as protestors lock up for another night in Terry Schrunk Plaza. Federal Protective Services, which has jurisdiction over the property, has decided to let the protesters occupy the site for the time being. The protestors continue to speak out about monetary inequality in America.
The upcoming election to fill the 1st Congressional District is seeing a low turnout of voters. The seat was left empty after David Wu resigned in August amidst a sex scandal. Ballots must be returned by 8 p.m. Tuesday. Overall turnout is currently at 28 percent, and based on past elections, it looks as if the final turnout figure will be well under 50 percent.
The ‘Move Your Money’ protest wound its way through downtown Portland on Saturday in support of Occupy Portland. The ‘Move Your Money’ campaign asks people to move their money from corporate banks to local financial institutions. This protest was not violent.
The city of Eugene hopes to reduce its fossil fuel usage by 2030. The city has seen a drastic decrease in fossil fuel usage over the last six years. This decrease can be attributed to many factors, including more fuel-efficient cars, rising gas prices, a struggling economy and more use of public transit, carpooling and bicycles for transportation.
