Hello, as a former Eugene resident and current Portlander, I feel very strongly that the former city should, as the latter city has done, ban the plastic grocery bag from its markets and grocery stores.
Although rants on the bag’s toxicity and nonbiodegradable state are cogent and important, one look at the massive garbage patch in the Pacific or a strangled turtle or bird will say more than the most daunting list of cold numbers or facts.
I worked for a county landfill for a few months where my chief job was just attempting to pick up and contain the massive amount of plastic bags blowing everywhere, which constituted probably 90% of the debris there.
Our children deserve better than to inherit a world glutted with this pernicious stuff. Let’s catch up with some of Europe, and ban the bag!
