The Oregon 2020 Initiative is a proposal to renovate and expand the EMU and the Student Recreation Center. With a referendum coming this November, the student body will have the ability to vote on the proposal.
Highlights of the SRC renovation include 110,000 square feet of new space, an expanded 16-lane lap pool, a leisure pool and spa, expanded locker rooms, a doubling of the current cardio and weight fitness training space, an added 3-court gymnasium for basketball and volleyball, an expanded student tennis center, a new juice bar and a and pro shop.
The November referendum will be directed toward the student body and whether they would support the student fees that would pay for 70 percent of the project. With a $160 million budget, the student fee would start at $60 per term fall of 2012 and increase to $100 per term fall of 2013. This would be a fixed student fee until the debt of construction is retired in 2042.
Results from the November 2010 Campus Consultation Survey, which was completed by 6,363 students, indicated that 79 percent of the student body would be “likely to support” the proposed improvements to the EMU and SRC. Although this suggests that the Oregon 2020 Initiative should slide smoothly into action, the November referendum will put those student opinions to the test.
