Vice President for Student Affairs Robin Holmes@@http://vpsa.uoregon.edu/biography@@ announced Tuesday that the remodeled EMU would feature an unprecedented move for student union buildings: a tandem dance club and bar.
“In putting together this student center, this hub, we really wanted to incorporate the student experience, in as much as that meant as we could accommodate,” Holmes said at the announcement. “And The District’s closing came just in time for a great partnership with their institution which has affected so many students at the University.”
The Emerald reported Tuesday about The District’s closure as well as its intent on recreating its image in the community and opening up partnerships.
“We’d like to, you know, just get better and I mean, this might help out with that, you know?” said frequent bartender Bruce Johnston. “We don’t really over-serve though, I just wanted to clear that up — no over-serving.”
For years, the potential of a beer garden in the EMU has been raised, but those planning the potential expansions wanted to take it to the next level. Students who got into the voting process two years ago recalled questions about odd additions to the EMU, but nothing of this magnitude.
“The quiz-thing asked about things like the beer garden and other stuff like that auditorium, but no question asked about a sleazy dance place like that,” University senior Elizabeth Short said.
A number of other students also filled out surveys two years ago, and while the results indicated a favorable response to the EMU renovation, those results will be abandoned until a student vote this November.
“I sincerely hope students realize this is not a counterfeit attempt to attract support for an unpopular proposal,” Holmes said.
A protest is planned outside the vacant District building for Friday; the protest is not connected to any of the student unions whose space would be occupied by the new dance club facility.
“The student unions are not campaigning against the proposal, they just want everyone to know what’s wrong with the proposal,” University junior Heather Johanson said.
