Oregon’s football program received two new verbal commitments for the class of 2012 on Sunday. Three-star linebacker Bryce Cottrell (Plano, Tex.), and four-star outside linebacker/defense end Jeremy Castro (Murrieta, Calif.) each informed the Ducks’ coaching staff of his intention to join the Oregon program over the weekend. Both Castro and Cottrell took official visits to Eugene for the Arizona State game before committing.
Cottrell, listed at 6-foot-3, 230-pounds by the recruiting website Rivals.com, reportedly chose the Ducks over offers from Arizona State, Arkansas, Boston College, Colorado, Syracuse, Purdue, and Arizona, among others. He took an official visit to Arkansas earlier this month.
Castro, pegged at 6-foot-1, 240-pounds by Rivals.com, reportedly held offers from Arizaon, Arizona State, Oklahoma, UCLA, and Washington, among others. Castro actally made a verbal commitment to the Huskies in July before changing his mind.
Oregon hosted a number of highly-ranked visitors that did not make commitments during the Arizona State game. Five-star safety Shaquille Thompson (Sacramento, Calif.), five-star defensive tackle Ellis McCarthy (Monrovia, Calif.), and four-star D.J. Foster (Scottsdale, Ariz.) all took official visits to Eugene last weekend. The Ducks are purportedly in good shape for both McCarthy and Foster, while most expect Thompson to end up in Berkeley.
Prior to Cottrell and Castro deciding on Oregon, the Ducks had been in a bit of an extended recruiting drought. Since Bay Area quarterback Jeff Lockie made a commitment to Oregon back in July, the Ducks had only picked up one commitment, from Oakland athlete Terrance Daniel, in a little over three months.
With Castro and Cottrell now in the fold. Oregon has 11 public verbal commitments in its 2012 recruiting class.
