When starting out as a freshman at the University last year, I had a major concern: I had no clue where I belonged. What was my place on campus? How would I make new friends? What could I do to get involved on campus? Who could help me if (and when) I needed it?
Then I went to the ASUO’s kickoff meeting and found some answers.
Working with the ASUO was a great way for me to make new friends from all different years. Having many upperclassmen in your friend group is nice when you’re starting out. They taught me about college life in ways no one else could@@sensual!@@, and I got to meet students from all kinds of programs and groups.
I also gained valuable skills while working with ASUO, such as how to plan, how to organize, how to promote events and how to work with a team. The things I did while volunteering were great resume-boosters.
Lastly, as a student who deeply cares about making positive changes on campus, in the community and in the world at large, I found the campaigns amazing. Working on campaigns to protect students’ rights, keep education affordable and fight for social justice was empowering and exciting. Thanks to my experience, activism will now be a passion and skill I will have for the rest of my life.
I would highly recommend dropping by the ASUO office to anyone looking to beef up their resume, make some friends, help change the world or just have something more to do on campus.
