University President Richard Lariviere flew to Washington D.C. yesterday to attend the U.S.-India Higher Education Summit Thursday, where he is serving on an eight-member “Faculty Collaboration and Scholarship” panel.
Lariviere was asked to participate in the panel’s discussion of the challenges in establishing academic exchange programs between faculty members in India and the U.S.
The summit is the first of its kind and is being co-hosted by Secretary of State Hilary Clinton and Indian Minister for Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal.
“I appreciate the invitation to participate in this important and timely conversation,” Lariviere said.
Lariviere’s presence was requested because of his background in the study of Indian language, history, religion and culture with which he earned his doctorate in Sanskrit. He also had professional success as a consultant for U.S. and Indian companies in information technology and business process outsourcing.
The conference is intended to strengthen higher education collaboration and opportunities for exchange between institutions in the U.S. and India, which are being promoted by both Clinton and President Obama.
“This is a great step in the U.S. State Department’s efforts to strengthen U.S. and India ties,” Lariviere explained.
