The Oregon women’s volleyball team filled its 2011 roster with the addition of freshman setter Shellsy Ashen late last week.
The Laguna Niguel, Calif., native joins defensive specialists/liberos Natalie Bookout Gonzalez of Riverside, Calif., and Katie Mardesich of Portland as the three unannounced additions to the Ducks’ seven-person newcomer group.
In her senior season, Ashen recorded 590 assists with a 9.2 per set average to go along with 110 digs and 14 service aces. For her efforts, Ashen was a first-team all-league selection for the second year in a row.
Bookout Gonzalez was a four-time all-league honoree at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, and was chosen as the 2011 Citrus Belt Area Athlete of the Year. As a senior, her 505 digs ranked 18th in the state of California.
Mardesich was an all-state honorable mention selection for Central Catholic High School, which won the 2010 OSAA Class 6A state championship this fall.
Duck fans will have their first opportunity to see the new Oregon women in action later this summer when the team hosts a pair of free exhibitions on Saturday, Aug. 13 and 19 at 7 p.m. at Matthew Knight Arena.
