ASUO Senators wrapped up a summer of business in the final summer session by mulling over proposed rule changes during a rare meeting in Condon Hall and the Executive took the opportunity to introduce its nominee for elections coordinator Wednesday night.
The major point in the rule changes is the addition of a public comment period. Originally the proposed change would be a twice-per-month period, but an overwhelming majority of senators requested that this be changed to a weekly session.
No changes were finalized, and further edits will be made in the coming week. The changes are slated to be approved by the full Senate next week, though the body has until Nov. 1 to finalize its rules.
ASUO Vice President Katie Taylor also took the opportunity to introduce Cedar Cosner, nominee for election coordinator. Cosner, a junior political science major, was appointed to the position after a friend recommended he apply.
“He is a fantastically qualified candidate for elections coordinator,” ASUO President Ben Eckstein said.
Cosner explained his affinity for the elections coordinator position, saying, “Above all things, the idea of democracy is a great one. I want to make sure that continues free of blips and bubbles.”
Cosner is set to be confirmed by the Senate next week. Eckstein said they he did not yet have nominees ready for the vacant Senate seats, though he did say, “We are actively recruiting and we do have applications in.”
