Students have many basic needs. In addition to food, water and shelter, hardworking students also sometimes need to get full, get healthy, get clothed, get entertained and get drinks. Here are some of the best places to do so.
Best place to get full: Steelhead Brewing Co.@@http://www.steelheadbrewery.com/@@
Food might be a basic need for everybody, but students who are looking for enough good food to feed an army should check out the Steelhead Brewing Co. at 199 E Fifth Ave. The restaurant offers plenty of delicious fare, from appetizers like quesadillas, calamari fritti and Greek hummus, to different kinds of burgers, pastas and pizza. With so much food, the hungry student might want to try one of everything. In addition to their wide menu, they also brew their own beer and root beer. Gather there with some friends, order a few different things and share for optimal noshing.
Best place to get full for picky eaters: Go Healthy Cafe
Eugene in general is a good place for those with alternative diets. A great place with vegetarian, gluten-free and healthy options is the aptly named Go Healthy Cafe at 3802 W 11th Ave. With sandwiches, soups, salads and wraps, Go Healthy Cafe offers a wide variety of choices for any diet. Many menu items are available in half orders for those with a smaller appetite.
Best place to get clothed: Buffalo Exchange
Trade in your old clothes for some gently used new ones (to you, at least) at Buffalo Exchange at 131 E Fifth Ave. At this thrift store, you can be pretty sure that cute new top you bought won’t be on every other girl at school. It’s an easy, economical and eco-friendly way to rejuvenate your wardrobe.
Best place to be entertained: University campus
After long hours of hitting the books, entertainment is a must. Though there are plenty of fabulous music venues and a few movie theaters in the Eugene and Springfield area, busy students don’t need to look very far to find something worth watching. The University and the surrounding area give students plenty to do between classes. People-watching is always a good pastime, and everyone knows there is no shortage of crazies to watch around campus. Pick a comfy spot on the grass, on the amphitheater steps, anywhere really — the University is great for those students with more voyeuristic entertainment tastes. Different University groups sometimes offer more legitimate forms of entertainment, though, if watching weird people isn’t your thing. Keep an eye out for DJs, singing groups and the like in the EMU Amphitheater.
Best place to get drinks (other than the obvious three): tie between Wetlands Brew Pub & Sports Bar and Sam Bond’s Garage
Rennie’s Landing, Taylor’s Bar and Grill and Max’s Tavern are all great choices for after school drinks, but further away from campus are Wetlands and Sam Bond’s, and depending on personal tastes, either could be your new hotspot. Wetlands, located at 922 Garfield St., is a great place for sports fans, with a full bar and plenty of TVs for game days. It’s spacious and tends to get busy on weeknights. If that’s not your style, try Sam Bond’s at 407 Blair Blvd., where there are always good tunes and good brews, though often with a cover charge.
Eugene offers its residents all kinds of local restaurants, bars and stores. It’s worth exploring the city and finding your own personal favorites, but now you have some good places to start.
