With Oregon off this week, the plan for this post was to give you some other Pac-12 games to watch for on Saturday. Then I looked at the schedule, and realized that the whole week may as well be a bye in the Pac-12. There isn’t a single compelling matchup, and most of the games feel like they’ve already been decided based on sheer talent gap.
Thus, we’re forced to bring you a slate of non-conference games worth tuning into. Without further ado, the first edition of the Weekend Watchlist:
No. 3 Alabama at No. 12 Florida (5 pm on CBS):
Earlier in the week, some poor soul in the Florida press corps asked Will Muschamp about his relationship to Alabama’s Nick Saban, and how it related to the “master-pupil” story line of the “Star Wars” trilogies. Then, this happened.
Yes, this is what reporters are paid the big bucks for. Questioning Will Muschamp about Star Wars is kind of like asking Rick Perry about health care. It’s just bound to induce confusion, mispronunciation, and general chaos.
Anyway, this game should be a lot more compelling than that press conference.
No. 8 Nebraska at No. 7 Wisconsin (5 pm on ABC):
Brilliant work, college football schedulers, putting the best two games of the weekend on at the exact same time. This game will be hard to miss, as the winner will emerge as the presumptive champion of the Big Ten and a frontrunner for a spot in the national championship game. It will also be fun to watch two teams with almost exactly the same school colors.
Washington State at Colorado:
Just kidding. The world is a better place without this game on television.
Auburn at No. 10 South Carolina (12:30 pm on CBS):
There are better games than this, to be sure. Honestly, I picked this because I want Marcus Lattimore to run for 250 yards on Gene Chizik and his faux sincerity. It’s also fun to watch Steven Garcia’s evolution into the Rex Grossman of college football.
Who am I kidding? Next Thursday night can’t come soon enough.
