Catching Up With … Josh Huff
Few true freshmen have made more of an immediate impact on the Oregon offense in 2010 than speedy wide receiver Josh Huff. The Houston native caught 19 passes for 303 yards and three touchdowns last season and will be leaned on as one of the Ducks’ primary downfield threats in 2011. The Oregon Daily Emerald caught up with Huff after practice this week to chat about the upcoming season and his return to Texas on Saturday.
Oregon Daily Emerald: For you personally it’s been a frustrating offseason plagued by injuries. How are you feeling now that game week is finally here?
Josh Huff: I feel excited. It’s a chance for us to show the nation what we have.
When you were getting recruited, you committed to Minnesota, Utah and TCU before eventually signing with Oregon. What went into all the changes, and why did you finally stick with Oregon?
The reason why I changed my mind so many times is just the simple fact that the places I went, such as Minnesota, Utah and TCU, the atmosphere was different — the family environment such as teammates and family. To register with the coaches really meant a lot to me. All four of the schools had it, but there was something about Oregon that set it off the top.
Coming out of high school, you were labeled as an athlete, having played quarterback, wide receiver, running back and defensive back. Where did you hope to see yourself once you got into college?
A little bit of everything on the offensive side of the ball. When Coach (Scott) Frost contacted me and told me I was playing receiver, and that basically they were going to put me at the position that would help the team win. I was excited to learn new things.
There are a handful of Texas boys on the Oregon roster. How excited are you guys to play this game in Dallas knowing this could potentially be one of the only times you play in the state of Texas while wearing an Oregon uniform?
It feels great. For all of us Texas dudes, it’s pretty much a homecoming for us. We’re just looking to put on a big show.
You go up against a pretty deep and talented Oregon secondary every day in practice. From your perspective, who is the hardest guy out there?
Oh, wow. We’ve got a couple studs in the back. First off, I have to say Cliff (Harris). Then Eddie (Pleasant) and (John) Boyett. Just the things that I’ve learned from Cliff on the cornerback view, he’s taught me a lot as a receiver and how to beat a corner one-on-one. The advantage goes to Cliff.
What’s on the iPod this week to get ready for the game?
Lil Boosie, Lil Wayne, and probably a couple dudes back from Texas to get me in that mood and to set the tone for the game.
You being a Texans fan, where do you see them finishing this year?
I’m predicting first since Peyton Manning is out, but hopefully first or second.
