Over the summer, the Oregon Daily Emerald underwent something we like to call “Project Evolve.” We lodged ourselves in a hot and stuffy boardroom and thought about everything our news organization is, and everything that it should be.
The answer we came to is quite simple: Our organization, both online and in print, needs to be a direct reflection of the student body’s interests. We need to tell you about the biggest events, offer you profiles on the people you should know about and, of course, drown your football-craving minds with all the game coverage you desire. We’ve revamped our entire existence in order to provide a news product that will be as essential to the University experience as the walk to Autzen Stadium or the late-night Dough Co. runs.
In print
Our print publication will be more useful and entertaining than ever. We’ll have a daily entertainment section letting you know what events are coming up and what’s going on, more space for student and faculty profiles in what we call our “Friday Weekend Edition” and expanded sports recaps on Mondays. We want every day of our publication to have something that everyone can use.
Love arts and entertainment? Turn to page 3, or the Scene section on Thursdays. Love sports? You know we have that. Love Sudoku and crosswords? Yeah, we’ll still have those. We don’t want to cater to one type of person; we want to be as dynamic and varied as the entire student body.
Online
In past years, our online presence has been pretty much a duplication of the print experience, giving students few reasons to check our website. This is no longer true. We’ve expanded our multimedia desk to six people, allowing for more consistent video releases. Be expecting a sports debate show, weekly club sports updates, opinion features and even some college-style cooking shows. Alongside these videos, we will be working as hard as we can to put up more breaking news, updates and news aggregation pieces to make our online experience significantly different in content and purpose.
Follow Duck football online
If you haven’t checked our football blog, Duck Season, by now, you’re seriously missing out. The sports desk has been breaking news updates and practice stories on a daily basis. Duck Season is your place for everything Duck football — if you’re a pigskin junkie, you’d better bookmark it.
Entering the community
The Emerald will be striving to curate the University culture and establish partnerships around campus. You’ll see us tabling at events, you’ll grab snacks from us on your way to class, and if you’re 21, you’ll even get a taste of our custom-brewed beer from Oakshire Brewery on Oct. 28 at Rennie’s Landing.
We simply haven’t been doing enough to embrace the culture we’re covering daily — this year, it’s one of our biggest goals.
Come and meet us
We are hosting an open house from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14. We will be giving tours, answering questions and discussing potential job openings. Representatives from advertising, creative services, and the newsroom will all be on hand.
Lastly, Editor-in-Chief Tyree Harris will hold regular office hours from 2-5 p.m. on Tuesdays. He’ll be available to talk about whatever is on your mind at that time, whether you want to talk story ideas or constructive criticism.
If this sounds like a lot, that’s because it is. We’re amid a nationwide shift in the way we consume media, and the Oregon Daily Emerald has a lot of catching up to do. We won’t be perfect, and we may even fumble occasionally, but we are confident that your college experience will be reflected in this — your — paper.
