In her first indoor pentathlon of the season, at the UW Invitational in Seattle this weekend, Brianne Theisen added a new achievement to her list of accomplishments: an NCAA record.
The senior from Humboldt, Saskatchewan, scored 4,507 points, finishing no lower than second in any event and setting personal bests in the high jump (six feet), the shot put (41 feet, eight inches) and the 800-meter run (2:14.50). Theisen broke the record of 4,496 set by Jacquelyn Johnson of Arizona State in 2008.
Multi-event competitions produced many successes for the Ducks. Senior David Klech scored 5,675 points in his first-ever heptathlon to hit the NCAA automatic qualifying standard. The mark is second-best in school history to Ashton Eaton’s world record of 6,499, set last season.
Oregon’s distance contingent also produced some encouraging results at Dempsey Indoor Facility.
Junior Luke Puskedra won the men’s 5,000m in 13:46.70 on Friday, an NCAA automatic qualifying mark.
In the women’s 3,000m, Jordan Hasay and Alex Kosinski combined on a 1-2 finish (Hasay in 9:05.42; Kosinski in 9:08.60) to hit NCAA automatic qualifying times. Hasay’s mark broke Melody Fairchild’s school record of 9:07.25, set in 1996.
The women’s distance medley relay team of Hasay, freshmen Chizoba Okodogbe and Laura Roesler, and Kosinski set a facility record by winning the race in 11:02.15. The time was third-fastest in school history and hit the automatic qualifying standard.
