The Eugene Police Department has vowed to step up its presence in and around the University today and tonight, anticipating what it calls “alcohol-related behavior problems” during observance of the BCS National Championship Game in Glendale, Ariz.
A press release containing the EPD’s “party management tips” was sent out Friday, and it gave a list of advice of how students could prevent the EPD from becoming involved during their game-day parties and festivities. EPD has sent out a similar list of tips during past high-profile sporting events and celebrations. The tips largely revolve around maintaining party size, not serving alcohol to minors and regulating music volume.
The release also makes it clear that the EPD will “Be cheering for (Oregon’s) victory against Auburn.”
EPD Lieutenant Doug Mozan said his agency had observed the varieties of festivities that had occurred in cities that had celebrated BCS appearances in the past and had noted that unruly and violent behavior often will occur.
As a result, the EPD will be beefing up its University neighborhood party patrols and will have extra police officers on overtime duty in order to handle any situations that get out of hand.
Mozan said his agency hoped to be able to handle any occurrences tonight without any assistance from outside agencies, unlike during September’s riots near East 14th Avenue and Ferry Street. Law enforcement officers from the Lane County Sheriff’s Department, Springfield Police Department and Oregon State Police were also involved.
The Emerald was denied a request to ride along and observe EPD Party Patrol operations during tonight’s game.
