The 2010-11 school year was one of transition, both for the University and for the Oregon Daily Emerald. The University strove to change its funding model through the New Partnership proposal before it was shelved by the state legislature, postponing the decision for another year. It also has supported the Campus Policing Initiative, which would eventually allow the Department of Public Safety to maintain a force of sworn police officers. The State Board of Higher Education announced Friday that tuition will increase next school year at the University by 9.5 percent for in-state students and by 7 percent for out-of-state students.
This year gave us the opportunity to write about some amazing and diverse stories. As student journalists, we had the chance to cover a wide range of captivating stories we would otherwise never be able to, from being able to watch the Oregon football team get to the National Championship Game — Michael Dyer was down — to covering an Elton John concert, the ASUO’s controversial funding of the Oregon Student Public Interest Research Group and allegations of sexual harassment in DPS.
For the Emerald, change came primarily through its new design, its new website and its new publisher, Ryan M. Frank. (All of these changes have made the publication infinitely more sexy.) There was some tumult and turnover on the staff throughout the year, but that never got in the way of how enjoyable and valuable working at the Emerald can be. On a personal level, I’m looking forward to coming back next fall and building on the momentum we already have to make this publication even better next year.
