Big Balls Chip, at it again
In a heartwarming series of moments, head football coach Chip Kelly gave first the Civil War’s game ball and then the Pac-12 Championship trophy to University President Richard Lariviere. Using the platform of Oregon football to promote academics is a bold move and we encourage more of the same in future years.
Down
The board’s decision
Lariviere’s position at the University is more than just a “personnel matter” and to try to make it anything less is a failure of perspective on the board’s side. Beyond the implications of the board simply ignoring the students and faculty, there are serious public meetings violations left in store for how they dealt with Lariviere.

The community response
In a city known for its activism, it’s difficult to remember a more joint and focused effort in recent years than the campus-wide opposition to Lariviere’s termination. The amounts of emotion from faculty and of hard work from students is truly inspiring. Meanwhile, the fact that the movement appears to be gaining traction now as a higher-education reform effort is a positive development.
Down
Special election results
As many guessed last week, the referendum questions were largely routs in favor of the positions they encouraged — in other words, very few people voted to “eliminate culturally responsive resources.” However, the fact that those words were in the vote should negate these results making last week’s vote largely a waste of time.
