After months of planning, the damage caused by a leaking water fountain in the John E. Jaqua Center for Student Athletes is finally being repaired.
The $42 million building has continued to suffer from water damage over the past eight months after a refrigerant leak seeped into the custom engraved wood flooring in the atrium several months ago and caused the floor to warp and crack in several spots throughout the ground level. The repairs are scheduled to take place over this winter break in order to disrupt daily operations as little as possible.
The project will covered by the state’s property self-insurance policy, which covers all damage to properties owned by state agencies. According to the insurance claim report, the project will cost the state’s insurance a total of $121,647, including the cost of materials and professional installation.
The white oak flooring, ordered and delivered over a month ago, costs $28,875 by itself. The wood was purchased from the manufacturer of the original flooring, Emerson hardwood floors in Portland, Ore.
“It’s not an expensive wood, but it’s a little above average,” Jim Lane of Emerson hardwoods said.
The custom engraving of the new wood costs $45,460, which was done by Raygun digital artistry of Hillsboro, Ore. The cost of professional installation, a project given to local company New Dimension hardwood floors, amounts to $47,312.
The athletic department has assured that, while maintenance costs will be covered by the academic budget, the costs for these repairs will be completely covered by an insurance claim.
However, according to the University’s department of risk management, the University will be charged fees by the insurance company after the repairs are made. The department that will pay for this is not yet certain.
“The university’s property insurance coverage is self-insured through the State of Oregon,” Michelle Gillette of the risk management office said. “The state will charge claim costs and administrative fees back to the university, and then departmental budgets may then be allocated charges.”
Both Bob Beals and Steve Stolp declined to comment on the insurance policy despite being listed as contacts on the insurance claim report.
