Puke and rally wasn’t on the menu for Devon Allen today; winning was.
The dual-sport star set a new personal record in the 200 as the Ducks had an overall solid performance at the Oregon Relays at Hayward Field.
Full on a spinach and bacon omelette, half a chicken and quinoa wrap, and an apple, Allen had another fantastic day. He handily won the 200, setting a new PR while doing so. His time of 20.68 ranks fifth all time in school history and 11th nationally this season. He was followed close behind by his teammate in the 4×100 Marcus Chambers, who finished second with a 20.94.
“New PR so I cant complain,”Allen said. “I wanted to run a little bit faster but we got some time for that.”
Of course, Allen wasn’t the only Duck to have a solid performance during the first full day at the Oregon Relays.
Junior Mitch Modin followed up yesterday’s first place effort in the decathlon with another strong showing, claiming first place when all was said and done. He scored a total of 7468 points in the two day event.
“Day one was pretty good for me,” Modin said. “Coming into day two I was a little beat up. Everyone is always tired and sore.”
“But I battled through, put up some decent marks for some of the events that didn’t go the way they should have but overall I was pretty happy.”
Modin won all but three events. He finished fifth out of six in the long jump, third in the pole vault, and second in the 1500 behind teammate Joe Delgado. Delgado finished second overall in the decathlon with a total score of 7402 points. It was his first time scoring over 7000 points in the event.
Oregon also turned in strong performances in the field as well.
Greg Skipper won the men’s hammer throw for a second straight week. He threw a best of 223-1.
Itohan Aikihionbare won the women’s shot put with a 54-4.50, a mark good enough for second all time at Oregon. She would finish second in the discuss later in the day with a 166-6.
Travonn White also won the long jump for the men. He recorded a mark of 24-7.75.
Earlier in the week head coach Robert Johnson said that the focus of this weekends event would be on “marks and times.” That message remained consistent following the meet.
“We were trying to get as many qualifiers as possible,” Johnson said after the last event. “One of our mantras is ‘strength in numbers,’ so the more people we send to regionals the better.”
The Ducks will look to close out the Oregon Relays with more qualifying marks tomorrow. Action for the final day of the event will begin with high school events from 9:15 AM till a little after noon. The featured events will start at 12:30 p.m. and go until about 3:30.
