Officials have suspended the search for the 20-year-old UO student, Jack Charles O’Hollaren, after a 12-hour search, KATU reported.
O’Hollaren was reported missing just after 8 p.m. yesterday near the North Jetty on the Siuslaw River.
O’Hollaren was seen to have gone into a surf and disappeared. His friend, who called the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, said O’Hollaren was under the influence of drugs and alcohol when he swam 40 yards from shore and never returned.
Officials used two 47-foot motor life boat crews, an MG-65 Dolphin helicopter crew, a Dolphin aircrew and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew searching 100 square miles for O’Hollaren, but to no avail.
“We extend our condolences to the man’s family as the decision to suspend a search is never easy,” said Lt. Anna Steel, search and rescue mission coordinator for the case. “We also hope to prevent future tragedies by reminding the public that drinking impairs your judgement, sense of distance and direction. As the weather warms up, we urge beach goers and boaters alike to stay sober and stay alive.”
O’Hollaren, 20, is enrolled at the UO as a Pre-Business Administration major.
The Lane County Sheriff’s Office asked that anyone with information call 541-682-4150.
Friends of O’Hollaren started to share their loss on Facebook at around 5:30 p.m.
