After ending up on the losing end of Oregon’s first spring scrimmage last Friday, the Ducks’ offense evened the score and won Wednesday’s head-to-head battle.
What is Oregon offensive coordinator Matt Lubick’s assessment thus far?
“We need to play a lot better,” Lubick said. “We didn’t execute as well as we needed to. When that happens, as a coach it’s on you first. We need to do a good job of making sure we’re doing everything possible to make sure our guys understand the schemes and play fast.”
With defensive coordinator Brady Hoke overhauling Oregon’s defense as the unit shifts to a 4-3 system, it is no secret there is work to be done on the defensive end. Oregon’s offense, however, still has plenty of questions to answer, as well.
Aside from Oregon’s quarterback race, the Ducks still need to find a center and define an offensive line rotation. They have an embarrassment of riches at the skill positions, and Lubick and Head Coach Mark Helfrich are striving to find ways to get the most out of their uber-athletic receivers and running backs.
“You can only have 11 people on the field, I think” Lubick said with a laugh. “I’m not sure what our best personnel group is yet. It might be two tight ends; it might be two backs; it might be four wide outs… I don’t think that will be solved until fall camp.”
Lubick said that neither Travis Jonsen nor Dakota Prukop separated themselves from the pack of quarterbacks during the scrimmage and called them “pretty even.”
He did acknowledge that Wednesday was Prukop’s best practice thus far in an Oregon uniform.
“It was Dakota’s best day since he’s been here,” Lubick said. “I’m very impressed with the way he’s learning the system.
“You could see he was enjoying it out there; he’s a perfectionist… he wants to get everything right. Sometimes when you do that you think too much.”
