If you’ve ever scrolled through Netflix for hours on end and thought to yourself, “Is my favorite movie and TV show streaming service getting smaller?” then you’d be absolutely right. All Flicks (a website that collects Netflix’s entire library into an easily-searchable place), reported that Netflix’s library has shrunk by a third in the past two and a half years. In 2014, the library contained 8,103 titles. As of March 23 of this year, it offers only 5,532.
Over the past few years, more and more streaming services have come up (Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBO Go, etc), leading to more competition to see which company gets which movies and TV shows on their platform. As more companies want the same content, the price to have those titles on the platform increases, which means less content on the platforms themselves.
There’s some good news: Netflix has been producing more and more original content for its platform. Back in January at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Netflix’s head of content Ted Sarandos said the platform will have over 600 hours of original content in 2016, including 31 new shows exclusive to Netflix.
This is great for Netflix and for fans of its original content. But it might dismay some longtime users of the service who go to the platform for movies and TV shows that they don’t want to buy or watch separately. After all, Netflix was the shiny new replacement for video stores like Blockbuster, so what happens when its library starts to dwindle?
But let’s not worry about this for now. Here’s what’s leaving and coming to Netflix this month.
