Oregon track and field wrapped up day one of the Pac-12 championships. As it stands, the women are in first place, while the men trail closely behind the University of Washington in second. The Ducks tallied Pac-12 and track records for the 57-point, day-one finish on both the men’s and women’s teams.
The Ducks men’s team is looking for their 10th straight Pac-12 championship this weekend, while the women are in search of an eighth consecutive title.
On the women’s side overall, second and third place went to UCLA and Colorado, while the Huskies led the men’s pack with 61 points on Saturday.
Sunday, the conference will run the finals of track events 1,500 meters and lower, as well as the remaining field events, including: women’s hammer throw, women’s triple jump, women’s discus, women’s pole vault, men’s high jump, men’s triple jump and men’s discus.
To start the action Saturday, the Ducks picked up top finishes in the men’s hammer throw, women’s shot put and women’s javelin.
Greg Skipper threw 70.34 meters on his second throw of the day to win the competition. In the women’s shot put, Brittany Mann and Itohan Aikhionbare finished one and two. Each women’s thrower broke the track record, 16.94, 16.30, respectively.
Jasmine Todd and Liz Brenner both finished in second in their respective events, long jump and javelin.
Switching to the track, Devon Allen ran a Pac-12 championships meet record and the fastest time in the NCAA this year in the 110 hurdles, 13.32 to advance to Sunday’s finals. He also qualified in the 100 meters. In women’s hurdles, Alaysha Johnson and Sasha Wallace both qualified for the finals in the 100 hurdles, 13.27 and 13.28.
Women’s sprints were among the best of the Oregon’s events Saturday.
The 4×100 team of Danielle Barbian, Deajah Stevens, Hannah Cunliffe and Ariana Washington set a track record, 44.38 before all four went on to qualify in the 100 meters, each breaking the track record there, too.
In the 200, Stevens, Cunliffe and Washington also swept the top three places to advance to Sunday’s final.
In the distance events, women’s steeplechaser Frida Berge set a school record, and Ed Cheserek won the 10,000 meters in 28:58.57. In the women’s 1,500, Lilli Burdon and Annie Leblanc finished one and three, while in the men’s, Sam Prakel and Matthew Maton finished two and four.
For the men’s 400 meter preliminaries, Marcus Chambers took a second place finish, 47.04, just .01 seconds off the meet record. He also ran anchor in the 4×100 relay preliminary where the team finished second overall, 40.55
Day two of the Pac-12 championships begins tomorrow at 9 a.m. with the women’s hammer throw.
