Oklahoma has Oregon’s number this season. The Sooners defeated the Ducks in the Elite 8 of the men’s basketball tournament. Now, they defeated the men’s tennis team in the second round of the NCAA Championship with a 4-2 win in Norman, Oklahoma.
Oregon won the doubles point for the twenty second time this season with victories on court No.1 and 3. Oregon’s No.42 Jayson Amos and Armando Soemarno defeated Oklahoma’s No.24 Axel Alvarez Llama and Andrew Harris 6-4. On court No.3, Cormac Clissold and Thomas Laurent beat Oklahoma’s Andre Biro and Maxime Mira 6-4 as well.
Down 1-0, Oklahoma rattled off three straight singles victories.
Andre Biro defeated Oregon’s Ethan Young-Smith 6-1, 7-5 on court No.6. Then, on court No.2, Simon Stevens fells to No.25 Llama 6-2, 7-6. On court No.4, Oregon’s Jayson Amos fell 6-4, 6-4 to No.61 Alex Ghilea to give Oklahoma the 3-1 overall lead.
Freshman Thmoas Laurent earned the Ducks only singles point by beating No.82 Spencer Papa 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 on court No.3.
To clinch the match, Oklahoma’s No.97 Andrew Harris defeated Oregon’s Daan Maasland 7-6, 6-5 on court No.1.
The loss marks the end of Oregon’s most successful men’s tennis season ever. Yesterday they earned their first ever NCAA Championship victory with a 4-1 win over No.23 Tulsa.
