A memorial, which will take place on Jan. 23 at the Center for Spiritual Living in Eugene, has been planned for late University of Oregon senior history instructor William Toll. Toll died due to heart failure after a surgery on Dec. 20., according to the Register-Guard.
Toll had a scholarly career of more than 40 years. He studied black history in America and worked to uncover “America’s ‘other’ histories,” according to a press release. He taught at the University of Michigan, Oregon State University and UO, publishing several books and works about American Jewish history and African American history. Toll was also a weightlifter and frequent visitor to the UO Rec Center.
The memorial gathering will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23. Toll’s family said they welcome the professor’s colleagues, students and friends to celebrate his life.
In lieu of flowers, the family said donations may be made out to the Department of History or to the Judaic Studies Program at the UO.
