As one-fifth of the committee that bargains with the Athletics Department to secure student tickets for football and men’s basketball games, the student elected to ASUO Student Senate Seat 7 acts as both a senator and a member of the Athletic Department Finance Committee.
With a budget this year of about $1.3 million, the ADFC “acts on all matters relating to the allocation and appropriation of incidental fees for the Athletic Department,” according to the ASUO Constitution.

Each year, members of the ADFC negotiate the number of student tickets and amount of student money that will be used to purchase them. Those tickets are then available for students on a first-come, first-served basis.
This year’s ADFC decided to cut 400 football tickets and 300 basketball tickets per home game as a way to save money and reduce the no-show factor — a recurring problem in which students receive tickets to games but don’t use them.

The budget also brought the committee for the first time in fulfillment of a contract stipulation requiring students to fund 50 percent of the fair market value of sports tickets.
As a part of the 18-member Senate, the person who wins Seat 7 will also vote on whether to approve the Programs Finance Committee and EMU Board of Directors budgets. Those committees control roughly $8.7 million in additional student money.
