Jontae Grace
Age: 18
Major: Journalism
Hometown: Portland
Year: Freshman
Emerald: What is your platform summary?
Grace: Oh, my platform summary is I want to improve communications between our students and our student leaders. I feel that the structure of the student body is fragmented and I think that I would do a better job relaying the student needs to the proper student leaders.
Emerald: What is your background, or why do you feel like you are qualified for this position?
Grace: My senior year in highschool I served as national honor society president. I am currently in resident assistant training for next year. And I maintain a 3.3 GPA.
Emerald: Why do you want the Job?
Grace: I want the job because I have never been involved in student government ever, and I think that it’s important to get this experience from somewhere.
Emerald: OK, In light of the ASUO retreat to Sunriver, what is the best way to ensure accountability from student leaders next year?
Grace: Accountability, like how?
Emerald: During the retreat there were instances of drinking and smoking,
Grace: Oh, oh, I heard about that.
Emerald: In light of that and everything that happened with this year’s leaders what is the best way to ensure accountability next year?
Grace: Umm … I think that we have to have better, the students have to have, to be better informed about the consequences of those actions. I don’t think they knew what they were getting themselves into, so I think that improved communication on that part.
Emerald: What issues do you think are important for the ASUO president to address in the coming year?
Grace: First should be tuition and we should try to work towards some sort of resolution with administration to reach a compromise, and second I think that I would say safety in the residence halls. Vandalism and theft has become a problem and that should be something that should be on the main agenda.
