Recent Emerald editorials have sparked heated debate across campus about the ethical dealings of the Associated Students of the University of Oregon and the Programs Finance Committee. As the most powerful publication on campus, the Emerald is a great forum for discussion. We, the ASUO Elections Board, encourage students to utilize the Emerald as a resource while participating in campus issues that affect us all.
Although it is our job on the Elections Board to remain neutral, it is also our job to encourage students to participate and run for elections. Student elections are a great way to get involved on campus. If you would like to participate in changing the ASUO, we highly encourage that you run for election.
Over the past several years, the voter turnout for the ASUO elections has been embarrassingly low. Only with political action and participation of the student body can voter turnout be higher and leadership stronger.
On election day, if there are no candidates on the ballot that you can identify with, the student body has failed its duty to nominate diverse representatives for our University. The Elections Board is calling on all members of the University to nominate and elect the best representatives of the student body. If you would like to contact the Elections Board with questions regarding the upcoming election or with suggestions, please write [email protected].
