Matt Haryasz knocked down an 8-foot jump shot with 14.1 seconds remaining to lift Stanford past Oregon 58-56 Saturday at McArthur Court.
The Cardinal forward drilled the one-handed floater after beating his man off the dribble. The basket gave Stanford (16-10 overall, 10-6 Pacific-10 Conference) its first lead since the 17-minute mark of the second half.
The Ducks (13-12, 5-11) had three chances to tie or take the lead in the final seconds but couldn’t convert.
After a missed three-pointer by Aaron Brooks and a missed tip by Malik Hairston, the Ducks received one final possession after a jump ball was called with 1.9 seconds remaining. Brooks found Hairston in the left corner but the freshman’s wild shot bounced off the top of the backboard.
Oregon once again struggled with free throw shooting during crunch time. Holding a 56-54 lead with less than three minutes remaining, Hairston twice missed the front end of a one and one, allowing Stanford to tie the game on a pair of free throws by Jason Haas with 1:11 remaining.
Neither team shot the ball well, but Stanford always found a way to knock down a big shot. Nick Robinson, who entered the game shooting 24 percent from three-point range, connected on a pair from behind the arc within a two-minute span in the second half to tie the game at 48.
Robinson finished 3 of 4 from three-point range and scored 11 points.
Oregon dominated Stanford in several statistical areas but still came up short. The Ducks held the Cardinal to 35 percent shooting, limited point guard Chris Hernandez to 16 points on 2 of 13 shooting and outrebounded Stanford 41-26.
The Ducks, however, received a combined 11 of 39 shooting performance from Bryce Taylor, Hairston and Brooks and couldn’t capitalize on their opportunities.
Oregon shot 34 percent form the field.
Haryasz led all scorers with 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Stanford.
Brooks led the Ducks with 14 points, while Hairston added 12. Ray Schafer finished with five points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked three shots.
