ONLINE EDITOR
The online editor is responsible for:
— Monitoring the Internet for media trends online.
— Editorial decisions, including decisions (in consultation with the editor in chief) as to what gets published on the Web page.
— Decisions regarding the visual design of the online edition. The online editor will consult with the editor in chief and webmaster regarding design and will work with the ad director to accommodate advertising in the design.
— Checking all links daily to make sure that all are functional.
— Knowing how to transfer the Quark documents to the online edition.
— Determining, by working with other desk editors, how supplementary
coverage will be created, organized, and updated on the Web site. (Example: Sports supplements,special feature packages, etc.).
— Overseeing the webmaster, whose responsibility it is to post materials to the Web site each morning and execute the design.
— Ensuring every aspect of the Emerald’s Web site, including but not limited to the archives, staff box and alumni page, is maintained and kept up-to-date.
— Ensuring that the format and technology used in the Emerald’s site are optimal for ease, informatively, accessibility and uniformity.
— Monitoring the news daily to keep abreast of all issues that need to be covered and see that no pertinent news is missed.
— Attending required staff meetings, calendar meetings twice a week and budget meetings at 4:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday.
— Keep regular office hours.
— Set individual goals each term to improve your journalistic skills.
Requirements: Must be enrolled as a student at the University of Oregon when the position begins. Must be able to work about 20 hours per week.
