University groups receive extra funding
Two University clubs got the green light from the ASUO Student Senate on
Thursday for funding to take their talents to the national level.
The University Ad Club’s request for $12,000 from surplus to send 18
participants to the national competition in Miami, Fla. , was granted 8-5.
Group representatives told senators they didn’t have the funds because they
were not expecting to advance that far in the competition. The Senate chose
to support the transfer because of the club’s fundraising and the trip’s
benefits.
“They gain a lot from it, but so does the University,” Senate
president
Peter Watts said.
The women’s ultimate team is also heading to nationals – in Spokane, Wash.,
with $500 transferred from surplus to their fund. Teammates said they have
been fundraising to prepare, but just needed a little more money.
“We’ve already raised $5,000 this year,” participant Izzy Stohler
said.
The Senate also transferred $360 from the International Law Students
Association’s conference funds to the publication of the law journal, and
additional money from printing and duplication over to postage and office
supplies. The group members said they needed the extra money because of
more printing.
“This year’s is twice the size of the previous journal,” ILSA
representative Scott Dorland said.
In other Senate action, the ASUO Women’s Center received $1,500 for
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender issues to sponsor the annual
Lesbopalooza events.
The Prehealth Science Center had $188 transferred from its program expense
account to the food account for its second annual Prehealth Spring
Reception, a networking social for doctors and students. The group also
received a transfer of $20 from office supplies to program expenses and $95
from surplus to food.
